Thanks to a friend and his facebook note, I’m going to see if I can join in on the musical fun. Here are the rules as I understand them:

Don’t take too long to think about it. Fifteen albums you’ve heard that will always stick with you. List the first fifteen you can recall in no more than 15 minutes. Tag your friends, including me, because I’m interested in seeing what albums my friends choose. (To do this, go to your Notes tab on your profile page, paste the rules in a new note, cast your 15 picks, and tag people in the note.

Let’s see there’s:

Quick Pitch: iTunes meets Pandora meets Ticketmaster meets every band’s website meets Netflix.

Big Idea Name: Hudba. Hudba in the Czech language means “music.” Sure, a new name might be needed for marketing purposes, but at least this is a decent start.

This image was made thanks to Bramandsons

Business Pitch: With the current music industries distribution from CDs to digital media, they have struggled to keep up. Consumers have turned to pirating for their musical means. The industry has made partnerships with many different companies to sell their products and business promptly picked up. However, the issue comes in sharing the overall pie across so many different companies and keeping the products and services interesting every day.

Hudba provides the central location for all things music. Here are some of the many functions and features of the Hudba community:

Purchase music via the large and comprehensive library – A music library that provides thousands of artists, albums, and singles across multiple genres.

Music recommendation based on smart algorithm and music genome project. Currently Netflix provides a great interface and recommendation system to allow individuals to find more movies and builds further interest in the service by making the recommendations more accurate and personal. The music genome project currently employed by the Pandora service already provides quick, accurate recommendations based on similar artists. By providing suggestions that closely match a user’s tastes, impulse buys can result providing greater revenue.

Simple music updates and reminders – Individuals can purchase music and signup for artist updates. Updates could include: new album releases, upcoming tours, band blog posts, etc. Often consumers find artists they enjoy but have difficulty remembering to check yearly for new albums or look for upcoming shows in the area.

Merchandising and ticket sells direct to consumers – With consumers signing up for updates at the time of purchase, further sells can be managed with the checkout. As consumers purchase albums, a recommendation could be made that the artist will be appearing locally at a venue and tickets are sold.

Band page personalization – Bands control the amount of marketing found within each artist page. This information can control the albums released, blog posts from band members, and the ability to create small fan communities that receive the latest and greatest information.

Social Media Connection – The internet is now a social place to interact with anyone and everyone. By providing integration with multiple social sites such as Twitter and Facebook, an artists latest creations (music, videos, etc.) can be spread into the internet wild in an effort to reach mass population.

Customized dashboard – Customized rss feeds or updates (stated above) could be generated in order to develop a central dashboard within the Hudba system that provides the relevant information that interest the user. The dashboard could provide quick feeds to news, upcoming starred/tagged albums, suggested recommendations (automatically and socially), and upcoming tour dates in the area based on purchases and recommendations.

Who to Pitch To: Record Companies, RIAA

Competitors: Apple iTunes, Napster, Amazon Music

Acquisition Potential: Any of the major competitors mentioned above would love to have this service as well as additional future players within the space (such as Google) who want to provide a simple interface to direct consumers to the music that leads their lives.

Dear Steve Jobs,

While walking to work earlier this week, I happened upon a woman who was starting her day with music from the world’s most popular music player. Now I can’t guarantee it was an iPod, iPod Touch, iPhone, or whatever the next overpriced item maybe, but I can guarantee she was using those white earbuds that come with each fruity musical purchase.

Now let me preface the rest of this letter that I have never been a fan of Apple. I don’t own any “i” or “mac” product nor will I. I personally believe that the products are overpriced for the functions they perform. The “mac” products are even farther away from my wallet since the extra charges for beauty can also be provided with open source (FREE) alternatives. However, it is a free world for the consumer and they can purchase whatever they so choose. But with all of my negatives, I must state that Steve Jobs, good or bad, has done so much to spread the modern age of music to the world.

With that being said, I believe that Steve better begin working on the next input devices for his devices that will be centered around touch, smell, or sight. Basically anything not related to hearing because all of his consumers will soon be death or at least everyone around them will be. Those white earbuds are going to kill everyone’s hearing and that’s coming from someone that loves to turn up the music loud and “rock” out. But its not good when, back to my original story above, that I could hear every lyric perfectly and the earbuds were NOT IN MY EARS. In college, I remember sitting 5 rows (yes 5 rows) away from someone using the same earbuds and the same result.

Steve, you claim to be a music purist, an audiophile. You stated:

“I’m an audiophile. I’ve had stereos costing, well I won’t say because you’ll think I’m crazy. But, costing a lot more. And, I’m thinking of getting rid of mine for this.”

Maybe there should be less iPod HiFi and more work providing people with better earbuds that actually push the sounds into the ear instead of to everyone around them. The thought might have been that if others heard the music they’d be interested in the device. Just the opposite is true. When I hear the music from 3+ feet away, I want to rip the earbuds out, stomp on the device, and promptly smile at the sound of silence.

Just spend the extra 20 dollars or so and provide decent headphones. Your consumers won’t even notice the extra price since it is only a two digit number change.

Sincerely a non-customer,
Ben

Much like one of my close counterparts, I too have been away from posting for far too long. I’m not promising anything life changing here, but at least it is more than a heartbeat to let people know I’m here. So like many posts where I try not to say too much, here are the fast facts.

I upgraded my old phone and am now enjoying life with my Android powered device. Sure it has its cons, but doesn’t every phone? Next path will be to attempt to build my own app for it and see if anyone is willing to download and/or buy it. I doubt the second part of that. Here’s hoping I can put together a better future post talking about apps and how this phone really measures up.

My newest side project will move any of my future movie posts to The AC Guild or Amateur Critics Guild. I’m hoping to push this really hard because it has been a thrill to create so far. If you don’t believe me, just head over to the About page and enjoy the most random ramblings you will find as well as a good picture or two.

I’ve just picked up the new The Rocket Summer album. I’m not enjoying as much as the past ones, but it still has a few fun tunes. Check out Nothing Matters.

In keeping up with my Falcons from my new west coast location, I’m pumped with the new addition of the Falcons family, Daunta Robinson. Now we just need a fearsome pass rusher and other teams will fear the days they have to face us. Saints, we will knock you down first.

I just enjoyed a wonderful weekend snowboarding in Mammoth. I’m no Shaun White, but I think I’m doing quite well for only having been two times now. The new board, bindings, and boots worked out great. Anyone ready for a fall trip now? Possible picture and video to come later depending on when the one who took the pictures and video lets me get my hands on them.

I’m a little behind the times, but thanks to a great deal, I just picked up the God of War collection pack. Sure I’ll be stuck playing God of War while everyone else is enjoying God of War 3. That’s fine. I enjoying playing games on the cheap.

The greatest candy time of the year as arrived once again. I’ve already begun stock piling as many as I can. I will note that the bunny shaped Reese’s are quite good as well so please don’t write them off. You still can write off the smaller easter eggs though. They just aren’t the same as the big ones.

Possible future posts?

NFL Draft Preview – Sorry Mike.

All things Android

My Music History – Have had this one in the works for a long time so we know that it will probably wait longer as well.

For quite some time I’ve wanted to write about something dealing with Green Lantern. He (or they) is (are) a superhero within the DC universe and is easily my favorite of all the superheroes. Well, it now seems that I can post some interesting news thanks to a wonderful week of many new notes concerning the Emerald Knight(s).

Movies
We all know that superhero movies are in high demand thanks to the wonderful successes over the years of X-Men, Spider-Man, Batman, and many more that are in development. The movie industry has been trying for a number of years to put together a Green Lantern movie. Originally slated as a comedy with Jack Black (worst idea ever), the execs finally decided to take a serious approach. A director was quickly named (Martin Campbell of Casino Royale and Goldeneye fame) and the search for the lead began. Several names were thrown out (Bradley Cooper, Jared Leto, and Justin Timberlake (on second thought, this is the worst idea ever)), but in the end, the role went to………..Ryan Reynolds.

I can’t say I’m completely thrilled over the casting, but Ryan Reynolds brings a name to the screen and that might bring in the money to finance the movie and make a big sci-fi blockbuster. Ryan’s also a comic book fan and usually makes it known that he wants to stay real to the literature that is already out there. Hopefully this will be more evidence of that. Now that we have our hero, we need our future villain in Sinestro. My possible choices (if they have the money) are Alan Cumming, Hugo Weaving, or James Marsters.

Based on this fan made trailer, I’m hoping for something along the lines of the new Star Trek movie for sci-fi action.

Music
I know you are already questioning this section because you are scared of what a green lantern can offer in terms of music. Well, thanks to a Green Lantern Message board (yes, I am that much of a dork) I stumbled across a band (Kirby Krackle) that centers around video games, pop culture, and comic books. It’s indie/rock/comedy but the lyrics are well thought out in my eyes. Basically it’s Weird Al but with a band.

The GL factor is from their summer release titled, “Ring Capacity.” I’m in love with this song. It’s my new favorite even if that tells too much about me. However, “Up Down Up Down” and “Back to the Beginning (Mark Kart Song)” are growing on me quickly as well. For those that play Mario Kart, you just can’t beat lyrics such as:

There’s nothing better than a Blue Shell,
Send it off yeah and send the leader straight to hell
Somebody help me, I’m trying to get back to the beginning!

or

I’ve got a princess in my rear view mirror,
I’ve got Italians on either side,
I’ve got a feeling things aren’t gonna get better,
so I ride!

Comics
Now I can’t get out of here without mentioning the art of comic books. I’m not going to get into storylines or anything like that. I want to stick to the art itself. I’m a sucker for good cover art, evident by my recent purchase of the Green Lantern #43 variant by Rodolfo Migliari below (click for a larger version).

The week prior I was also given a great cover for Captain America Reborn 1 by Alex Ross. Ross is one of my favorites thanks to his realistic depictions of the superheroes. While I’m here, I figure I can share some of my other favorite covers. Most of them are quite recent and are based on what covers I can remember that stood out or I could find.

I don’t really have enough for a complete post about anything important but over the past few weeks there have been several items that I’d like to spill my thoughts and ideas around. That’s right. This is one of those I don’t care enough to devote full time so you are getting my halfhearted approach. Welcome to the hodgepodge.

Alex Rodriguez is on steroids? Really? The savior of baseball? The one that was to make all of the records right and legit. Well, he is now just another cheater. I wonder if he is actually upset at what he did or the fact that his name was released. I mean, you can’t state that you never did steroids and then be exposed for telling a lie. It just won’t work out well when you ask us to believe you when you state you are no longer taking them. He’s a cheater to me and if I actually attended games I’d boo him.

The World Baseball Classic is coming up and the world doesn’t care. I’m starting to notice a trend with these world athletic events. It seems that the athletes or owners are pushing to not let the players participate. You don’t see this same concept with the World Cup. The players will play regardless and the world wants them to play. Is there a higher sense of honor in the world cup? Why don’t the other sports show it?

I’m a fan of Lost and 24, but Burn Notice is the show that really gets me excited each week. When its Thursday, I have a smile on my face. Not because it is almost the weekend. It’s because that Michael, Sam, and Fie are about to kick butt. Everyone I’ve suggested the show to has really enjoyed it. It’s Spy + Equalizer + A-Team.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. Heroes is not a good show. Yes, I watch it, but it isn’t that great. The stories are terrible and never really conclude. The writing can’t develop characters and now there are too many. The first season was good but only had 2 great episodes (“Company Man” and “Five Years Gone“).

Free Agency starts tonight at 12:01AM for the NFL. I don’t expect big things out of the Falcons, but I could see us going after lesser Free Agents. Derrick Brooks’ name was thrown out today which I like in ways but you can’t pick up a huge rival such as this while you are dropping your loyal player (Keith Brooking). Instead how about we get Jermaine Phillips? I’m always a fan of more Georgia players on my dirty birds.

I love it when the “good” NFL combine stories are released. Especially the ones where a kicker beats the other players in the workouts. A kicker who benches 225 lbs 25 times? More than his USC LB teammate?

I’ve recently purchase cymbals for Rock Band 2 and I must say that it dramatically increases the amount of fun one can have playing rock’s greatest tunes. I’m barely moving into the area of “Hard”, but there are a few songs that I really feel like I’m a fake rocker.

All this talk about a new stimulus plan reminds me of the following Ducktales Inflation lesson. I’m just glad we are passing on debt further to our children. That just means I don’t have to pay for this mess.

Yes, the US and the world is in bad shape due to the economy. We all know it. All of our investments are dropping. It’s terrible. Let’s get over it and begin to move forward. We can’t fix what most of us caused so we need to begin turning over a new leaf. No more living outside of one’s means. Change people. Don’t wait for someone else to do it for you no matter what John Mayer tells you.

Watchmen comes out next week and I’m looking forward to it. Not because it is another heroes movie. I’ve read this graphic novel and it blew my mind. When I started it, I didn’t think much of it other than the writing was quite good. It wasn’t until I reached the end that I truly realized how good it really was. Take it how you want, but I will be upset if there is not fully frontal male nudity in this movie (it actually has a purpose here). Wow, I can’t believe I just typed that.

Reese’s Easter Egg time is upon us. It is now time to begin hoarding for the winter. If you go to a store and they are out, you know where to find me.

Another year is down and I’m just a little bit older. With 2009 here and now, we take a quick look back across the board on the year that was 2008.

Music

I picked up several great CDs over the course of the year, but there has to be one that is a cut above the rest. When I opened up Amarok to see which albums were listed for this year, I quickly and easily knew the answer.

Winner

Feed The Animals by Girl Talk

This CD is a mix of everything you have heard and nothing you have ever heard. I’ve tried the other Girl Talk albums, but this one is where Girl Talk really found the right formula. The songs move from one to the next as a seamless transition. The album takes you back across your life as you pick out all of the songs used to make the mix. I’m personally a fan of “Hands In The Air” and “Play Your Part (Pt. 1)”.

Honorable Mention

Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings by Counting Crows

Let me start by saying James is going to kill me for giving this Honorable Mention. I guess I better now shy away from Bama jokes. Anyway, Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings is easiest to describe as an infusion of “August and Everything After” and “Recovering The Satellites”. Not really sure why I would review this item again, but “When I Dream of Michelangelo” and “Come Around” still top my list for great songs on this album. The more I have heard “Come Around” on the radio the more it has become a CC mainstay for me.

Movies

2008 was the year of hype and that usually leads to disappointment, but it seems that for once the hype was for real and we were all happy to fork over our 10+ dollars.

Winner

The Dark Knight

TDK led the reviews for the year (both critic and consumer). The hype was a fear factor in my eyes but this movie went above and beyond so many other “comic book” movies that it stands as simply a great movie. I’m not sure I can say much more for Batman and the Clown Prince of Gotham.

Honorable Mention

Hellboy II and Iron Man

The poster may be of Hellboy II but that is simply because I don’t believe it received as much praise as Iron Man did. Hellboy II was much better than the first despite any rumors you might have heard. Iron Man was great as well even if it included Gwyneth. Hellboy II may be ending its franchise (or it looks that way) but Iron Man is only the beginning (Iron Man 2 and Avengers already in the works). However, like I said before, TDK raised the bar significantly.

Television
Heroes. 30 Rock. ER (The final season). Fringe. The Simpsons.

There were many great episodes but I’m not certain if there were any great seasons. I’ve fallen behind on my Heroes watching but it did seem to pick up as I watched more. I will still state that Heroes is not a great show but a good show. I enjoy its theme (everyday people with powers), but I know it can only have a great episode here and there.

The Simpsons has had an amazing run, but I know that it needs to come to an end. The family has performed every action and every job known to man. It is starting to hit the moment where it is trying to tell the same story again in a different way (with bad results). I have a new idea though that I believe everyone can enjoy. The Simpsons should end after this season, but become a new generation’s Charlie Brown. Only produce the Halloween special yearly. It is the highest rated episode and usually the best one regardless of the season.

Sports
My sports story of the year is another no shocker. Anyone who has seen me over the last few months knows that I live, eat and breath my Atlanta Falcons. The playoffs are here and I’m already pumped. My pro team is playing with passion and as a team. Not only are we a great story but an even better team. When this season is over I’ll have nothing to do until the NFL Draft returns. I mean, no other sport is worth my time after football.

Side Note: Why do the great songs of the 80s offer such great inspiration? Was the great montages?

While driving in my car tonight, I had a strange little conversation. It was mainly strange because I was the only person in the car and I was not talking through my cell phone. I was actually chatting it up with the guy in the vehicle next to me.

You see, the guy next to me, who we will call Red Car Guy (RCG), and I had passed through about 3 lights together. I in one lane and he in the other. I had my windows down enjoying the cool night air and my stereo cranking out some much needed tuneage (music for those “un-hip” to my choice of terminology). Now, at the time I was not in the mood for Instrumental, Rock, Classic Rock, 80′s, Pop, Punk, Rap, R&B, Polka, Comedy, Christmas, or even Techno. I was in the mood for something good. Since I had just finished watching Four Brothers (good flick), I felt that The Temptations would be a good choice, and of course, I went to my favorite song first, “I Wish It Would Rain.”

Back to RCG, he got my attention to find out who I was listening to because he could not remember who it was. When I told him I received one of my favorite compliments: “Great group man. That’s a great song.” Wow, random conversation, but it was still great. I sometimes have wondered if the “oldies” were still respected as they should be. I guess I have my answer now. I mean, how often do you hear about someone complimenting your music (from another car) when you are blaring The Temptations, The Association, or The Playboys from your stereo? Honestly…
